Often tubs are restored and refinished in the same manner than an old car fender would be. The dings and scratches are filled with putty and then the whole tub is buffed and shined. Next, they apply a bonding agent over the tub’s surface to ensure that the new finish won’t peel off of the older porcelain. Any impurities that are on the surface of the tub can cause the new finish to not adhere properly. Many refinishers will sandblast the old tubs to ensure that there is no soap residue or any other particles that may prevent adhesion of the new finish. This refinishing procedure can be done in your home if your old tub is attached or at a shop if the tub can be moved.
